The Blackstone Public Library provides materials and services to all patrons in their pursuit of informational and recreational enrichment. The library strives to inspire all patrons toward a love of reading and learning and actively supports and cooperates with our school libraries. The Blackstone Public Library is dedicated to being an integral part of the community where people of all ages can meet in a friendly, accessible, and comfortable environment.
The Blackstone Free Public Library opened its doors on July 20, 1889, with a transfer of books from the former Blackstone Athenaeum and Library Association. For many years, library stations were maintained in Millville and Blackstone. Shelf space was rented in private homes with paid district carriers transporting books to these locations. In the mid-1930s, the library moved to the Town Hall on St. Paul Street. By 1978, the library occupied 1,374 square feet of the lower level. The need for a larger library became apparent as the town grew. A Planning and Design Grant was submitted to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners in 1999, followed by a Library Construction Grant in 2001. Both grants were awarded the balance of funds approved by the voters of the Town of Blackstone. The Grand Opening Ceremony took place on June 13, 2004.
