A brief history

The library was a gift to the town from James Danielson Lincoln in memory of his mother, Sara Danielson, and his wife, Mrs. Eliza T.M. Lincoln. Sarah Danielson was the daughter of Timothy Danielson, one of Brimfield’s prominent Revolutionary War soldiers, and through her mother’s second marriage, Sarah was a step-daughter of General William Eaton of Barbery Pirate fame. She married Dr. Asa Lincoln, and in 1823 James Danielson Lincoln, the sixth of their ten children was born. Sarah died when he was ten years old and James went to live with an aunt in Franklin. He later lived in Wrentham where he became a successful manufacturer of jewelry. In his old age, he decided to realize a life-long desire to honor his mother’s memory through the gift of a library in Brimfield.

For a first-hand account of the new library, read Librarian M. Anna Tarbell’s report in the Brimfield Town Report for the Year Ending March 6, 1905.
