Lilly Library is a full-service library providing materials and programming to the Florence, Massachusetts community.

It was founded in May of 1890 by Florence resident Alfred T. Lilly who was determined to provide a permanent library for the Florence community. The Victorian structure near Cosmian Hall was designed by C.H. Jones of Springfield and built on land donated by Mr. Lilly. The library opened with over 5,000 books on its shelves. Today, with a collection of over 20,000 books and other materials, Lilly Library proudly continues the tradition of the old-fashioned library. The antique oak tables and polished bookcases invite readers to browse, research, and explore other worlds in a quiet, peaceful reading environment. Lilly Library strives to serve the Florence community for the second century of reading pleasure.

The Broadside Bookshop has been a feature of Northampton’s Main Street since it was founded by Bruce MacMillan in 1974. It began at half its current size, and grew steadily, expanding to its present layout in 1986. Bruce, who was a force for literacy and civility in the community and widely beloved, died in 2001 and the store is now run by three of his long-time employees.

We’ve seen lots of change over our forty years in bookselling; changes in the face of Northampton, changes in our own decor and merchandise, and immense change in the publishing industry. We’ve weathered it all, and we continue to thrive, thanks to our wonderful loyal customers and a progressive, enlightened community that understands what independent bookstores have to offer.
