Have you always understood writing craft topics, such as plot, setting or tone, to be objective subjects? In his book Craft in the Real World, Matthew Salesses argues that “what we call craft is in fact nothing more or less than a set of expectations. … These expectations are never neutral.”

Reviewer Leni Zumas, author of Red Clocks, says that Salesses “explores how beliefs about ‘good’ writing are profoundly marked by race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and national identity; and he offers concrete strategies for liberating our classrooms and writing practices from the straight-white-male default gaze.”

Join us on December 12th, 3-4:30 p.m. on Zoom for an open-ended discussion of the insights and lessons this book offers as we rethink our understanding of the writing craft. Register HERE.

[The book is available at local bookstores and through Forbes Library.]
