The Mission of the Brewster Ladies’ Library is to be a cultural and life-long learning community center that provides free access to a range of resources, activities, and professional assistance to further enhance the quality of life.
In 1852, when Brewster was flourishing with the wealth of homecoming sea captains and the vigor of many small businesses, the Brewster Ladies’ Library came into being. Two young ladies, Sarah Augusta Mayo and Mary Louise Cobb, with several friends, engaged in the ambitious project of raising money to provide a library for the town. They were successful, and established a shelf of books at the home of Captain Mayo on Main Street. This library opened January 29, 1853.
